LOST MEMORIES, another radiophone piece from Giardini Pensili`s "Teatro dell'Ascolto" (acoustic theater) deals with languages and translations, which, used as the means of understanding, also represent the limits of human communication. LOST MEMORIES was a live presentation of a "Interaction of Voices" which was controlled by the use of an interactive computer system.
The acoustic material for the sound space of LOST MEMORIES was formed primarily from the Italian original text, which was translated into various other languages. Spontaneous polyphonic occurrences develop through overlays of the languages used in the piece. The acoustic characteristics of the languages gives combination of many tones melody, (acoustic) color and rhythm. According to Isabella Bordoni, "...a system is formed in which the relation between classical and modern languages is changed. This is one reason why I didnít only choose languages which we were familiar with, but also languages such as Armenian, Persian, Greek, Hungarian, Hebrew and Arabic."
