Angeregt wurde das Projekt "Silence Descends" durch das gleichnamigeBuch von George Case - die Geschichte eines Mannes der im 25. Jahrhundertüber den langsamen aber beständigen Untergang des Informationszeitaltersreflektiert. In mehreren Liveperformances, die in weiterer Folge auch alsGrundlage für eine gemeinsame CD dienten, haben die sechs kanadischenKünstler Shawn Chappelle, Joelle Ciona, Peter Courtemanche, Anna Friz,Eilleen Kage und Bill Mullan auf die Geschichte von George Case Bezug genommenund ihre eigenen Zukunftsvisionen entwickelt.

Das Projekt "Silence Descends" war auch Teil von "SoundDrifting" ein on-site on-air on-line Projekt, das anläßlichder Ars Electronica 1999 stattfand und an dem sich auch das Kunstradiobeteiligte. Ein eigens hierfür programmiertes Soundsystem füttertefür die Dauer des Festivals das Internet mit Live Sounds und generierteso einen sich permanent selbständig aktualisierenden Webcast, derschließlich gemeinsam mit sechzehn weiteren Projekten zu der globalenSoundinstallation "Sound Drifting" verschmolz.

In his book "Silence Descends" (Arsenal Pulp Press, Vancouver, 1997) George Case describes the end of the Information Age - starting at the presentday and progressing to a point 500 years in the future. Inspired by the book, this CD is the result of a collaboration amongseveral sound artists with diverse artistic backgrounds - including video,live projection, radio, noise, sound installation, music, performance and writing. Other components of the project included variations and extensionsof the work in performance, and a web site that featured a generative radio algorithm (an automated re-mix, producing a never-ending web-cast).

The process of group collaboration involved several live jam sessions exploring sounds from traditional instruments, home-made instruments,Foley effects, vocal stretches, and tape. These sessions provided much ofthe raw material for the CD. The artists chose samples and excerpts from these sessions, augmented or replaced them with taped material from more controlled recordings, and layered the sounds into the resulting compositions.

The work describes the end of the Information Age - from the beginningsof endless chatter and natural disaster, through the last frontiers ofspace and time, the depths of the ocean, the processes of death, somewherea group of dazed musicians crawl out from the rubble and into the future wherethe Information Age is purely a memory.
