In the last decades, the director and radio artist Arsenije Jovanovic, who was also a director at the National Theatre in Belgrade for eleven years, realised more than 150 radioworks, amongst others for the WDR, the RAI, the SFB, for Radio Belgrade and since 1988 regularly also for the ORF Kunstradio.

His most recent radiowork "The fear of the birds", which was realised in April 2001 by commision of Kunstradio, tells the story of Arsenije Jovanovicīs uncanny meeting with a bird far away on the adriatic sea half way between Istria and Venice. "Itīs not easy to describe that feeling, but in this very specific moment I suddenly had the impression, that all three of us were a unit - me, the sailer and the bird, who flew down to us like he came straight from the universe. Everything around us was quiet. There was no wind, which was also the reason why we couldnīt sail. The only sound which broke through the silence was the regular chitter of the engine. We were like a small closed organism. We were forming our own universe, it was like all the connections to the rest of the world were broken. The two parts of the coast, the croatien and the italien one seemed to be infinately far away. The past and the future suddenly played no important role anymore. Somehow I had the feeling as if everything what happend in my or in our lives before came to an end. The past stopped to exist. Suddenly we all belonged to another world, another universe, another sphere of life."

On Arsenije Jovanovicīs question, where the little bird came from and what he was looking for on the sailingboat, the sailor answered: "The poor little creature just tried to escape the war. Maybe the sailor was right - maybe the little bird really tried to escape the war, away from the mountains where the shooting started, away from the bad energy of the people, who were preparing for the war. This negative energy is enough for the animals to know that there is something terrible going to be. And this feeling of the bird was a feeling a lot of us had, also me and the sailor. This terrible fear."

Itīs about ten years ago that this event took place, by that time nobody would forsee to what extent the clashes in the former Jugoslavia would go. A lot of the radioworks, which Arsenija Jovanovic realised in the last ten years, are dealing with the history of itīs homeland, the terrible happenings which took place there and war in general. But Arsenije Jovanovic doesnīt only want to illustrate the power and the political violence, as he points out, but he wants to transform the rough accoustic reality into the poetry of sound, in an area, where there exist other rules. "Itīs like with a hurricane and a small boat. There is no hope of salvation for a little piece of wood in a hurricane in the middle of the northatlantic. When the wind blows with hundreds of miles per hour. On the other side I also think, that it makes no sense to say that an artist cannot change anything in a warsituation. This statement helps nobody especially not the artist himself. And I also think that art has a value for the future. What ever we do today and what might look like a helpless gesture at the moment when we are doing it, will tomorrow help somebody to understand the history better. In order to make things better in the future if that is possible at all. Also if art cannot change anything in the moment of the happening, it could make function as a prevention in the future."

II:

"Opera Balcanica"

Dauer: 33'13"

"Opera Balcanica" was realised in the year 2000 commisioned by the ABC Listening Room, the soundart program of the Australian National Broadcasting Corporation. Arsenije Jovanovic: "I tried to make a self-contained artistic and accoustic piece which constists of different archaic Songs of the different people of the Balkans: Songs from Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Rumania, Albania, Montenegro and Greek. I not only tried to make a musical bridge between the different songs, which are all by itself very unique, but I also tried to create a unit. Maybe this sounds like a banal political conclusion now, but i also tried to express with my piece that all this old songs and dances, this cultural jewelery, can exist next to each other, although they are all very unique, and the different people of the Balkans could do that as well."
