Extreme Low Frequencies (short ELF) is the least frequent part of the
electromagnetic spectrum: from 0 to the Kilohertz area. Here one finds
the Sferics, which originate from the atmospheric discharge procedure.
One also finds Technics (also known as Electrosmog) which is generated
through technical procedures. Because these frequencies are located
in the field of bioelectrical processes, the question occurs whether
they have physiological effects.
Udo Wid comes from the biophysical research and worked on a project
questioning which physiological effects ELF have. His numerous projects,
including this one, are aimed at a SYNERGY OF DISCIPLINES: a coincidence
of science, art, philosophy and daily routine. The four-part audiopiece,
E L F, can also be seen in this context. It points out the origin of
E L F and of the natural radio: from the lightnings of the primordial
atmosphere to the origin of the Ionosphere and its oscillation, to the
current atmospheric weather radiation and the ever-increasing household
Electrosmog.
Franz Pomassl, the sound engineer for this piece, is also working since
quite some time with subsonic acoustic frequencies - frequencies which
one can't hear, but can only be felt. He operates the Label LATON, on
which a CD will be published regarding this project.
Structure and content of the 4 pieces:
ONE: PRIMORDIAL SOUP
From the electrical discharge of methane in the primordial
atmosphere originate the first larger biomolecules, amino acids: in
the experiment of Miller this primordial radio was reconstructed in
a glass tube. The play of life begins. In the sound sequence, one can
hear a recording of a 10Hz frequency, which was recorded while a weather
front approached. One can hear impulses of heavy discharges. It was
the audio part of a theory-performance in the Wiener Secession in the
framework of the event 2001.
TWO: EVOLUTION
An oxygen-atmosphere is created and with it an Ionosphere.
The earth and the ionosphere together make an electromagnetic hollow
space resonator, where the basic frequency remains around 10 Hz. A type
of basic radio. Humans are developing themselves and the alpha-area,
the "basic frequencies" of the cerebral processes, also lies
at 10 Hz. Coincidence? You can here a simple sequence, 20 times the
original speed, recorded with a 10Hz-Schumann-Resonance-Receiver, which
is currently part of a seminar-performance on the campus of the Trinity-College
in Dublin.
THREE: CORRELATIONS
Science originates through cultural evolution. Here
something is true when fact and description correspond with one another.
Experiments should prove... During a scientific project at the end of
the seventies, in which the author took part, a small ELF-measuring
station was built in the middle of a forest near the Ottensteiner reservoir.
One can visit it in the framework of the Waldviertel Festival. There
you can hear what happens in a 28kHz-band (logarithmic increase, envelope
are audible), that means the atmospheric radio of the Sferics.
FOUR: EVERY DAY
Thoughtworthy. the mechanisms of the habits and the
opposing flashes of inspirtion... Actually a lot of sedative neural
mechanisms: how far is electrosmog triggering these mechanisms: in the
direction of paralysis or stimulation? At home, a frequency area of
up to 1600 Hz was recorded (the net frequencies were filtered out).
Smogradio: you can hear the digital tact of the Pcs and mobile phones,
crackling switch on and off impulses, and in the back of that the electromagnetic
rush of a big city...
