Der Larsen-Effekt (Rückkopplung/Feedback), benannt nach dem dänischen Physiker Søren Larsen (1871-1957), bezeichnet ein Phänomen, das vielen aus Konzerten bekannt ist: hält man ein Mikrofon zu nahe an einen Lautsprecher, verursacht dies einen sich schnell entwickelnden schrillen Ton, der zum Zusammenbruch des Audiosystems führen kann. Was früher als unangenehmes Störgeräusch galt, ist seit den Sechzigern vor allem in der Rockmusik als gängiges Stilmittel anerkannt. Tritt dieser Effekt in der elektronischen Kommunikation auf, kann man von einem Störfall sprechen. Informationen können nicht mehr sinnvoll übertragen werden.

In ihrer Live-Aktion im Wiener APA-Gebäude operieren die Wiener Künstler thilges3 mit dem Mittel der Rückkoppelung. Sie interagieren damit mit den Radiosendern Österreich 1 und FM4. Die Verortung des Projekts in der Zentrale der wichtigsten österreichischen Nachrichtenagentur bildet durch die Funktion der APA als Sammelstelle, Filter und Distributor von Informationen einen spezifischen inhaltlichen Rahmen. Die künstlerische Transformation von Vernetzung, ein in der Medienbranche alltägliches Phänomen, verleiht dieser Handlung eine allgemeinere symbolische Bedeutung.

Um die Rückkoppelung zu erzeugen, schicken die Künstler von thilges3 (akustische) Informationen an den Sender (Radio). Diese kommen unmittelbar wieder retour via Radio. Mikrofone, die vor den Lautsprechern der Radiogeräte angebracht sind, fangen den gesendeten Sound ein, der von den Künstlern bearbeitet wird. Sie bedienen sich dabei modelaren analogen Synthesizern; aufgrund ihrer flexiblen Ansteuerung können diese individuell und spontan neu konfiguriert werden, was der künstlerischen Intention von thilges3 sehr entgegen kommt.
Zugleich sind die Mikrofone für den Feedback-Effekt verantwortlich: Das Kurzschließen von Sender (Radio) und Empfänger (Mikro) verursacht die bekannten Störungen, die - im extremsten Fall - eine sinnvolle Übertragung von Informationen völlig unmöglich machen. thilges3 setzen sie hier aber als ästhetisches Mittel ein: Es entsteht ein "closed circuit" oder akustisches Perpetuum mobile.

Wie bei all ihren künstlerischen Interventionen, werden thilges3 auch im APA-Gebäude eine quadrophone Situation inszenieren. Die Stereokanäle der beiden Radiosender werden in Monokanäle gesplittet und sind dadurch einzeln ansteuerbar. Ziel ist es, den Effekt räumlicher Akustik zu erzeugen.

The Larson effect (feedback) named after the Danish physician Søren Larsen (1871-1957) describes a phenonemon which can be experienced repeatedly at concerts: If you hold a microphone too close to a loudspeaker this causes a rapidly evolving piercing tone which can even lead to a collapse of the audio system. What was once regarded as an annoying noise has become an acknowledged stylistic device, especially for rock music since the sixties. In case this effect occurs within electronic communication, however, it ranks as a breakdown as due to this incident the transmission of information no longer makes sense.

In their live act at the APA building in Vienna the Viennese artists thilges3 (www.thilges.at) will operate with the feedback effect and interact with the radio stations Österreich 1 and FM4. By locating the project in the headquarters of Austria's mayor news agency (Austria Press Agency) and the company's role as information collector, filter, and distributor content-wise a specific context is created. The artistic transformation of networking provides a wider symbolic meaning to a common phenomenon in the media branch.

In order to evoke the feedback the artists of thilges3 send (acoustic) information to the transmitter (radio). These are resent immediatly, again via the radio. Microphones are adjusted infront of the radio loudspeakers capture the transmitted sound which, then again, is processed by the artists with modular analogue synthesizers. Due to the flexible employment of this machinery the modules can be reconfigured individually and spontaneously which meets the artistic intention of thilges3.
At the same time, the position of microphones is the reason for the feedback effect: The short circuit of transmitter (radio) and receiver (microphone) causes the well-known disturbances which, in the most extreme case, make a meaningful transmission of information impossible. In this case, thilges3 uses the feedback effect as an aesthetic method - a "closed circuit" or acoustic perpetuum mobile is created.

As in all their artistic interventions, thilges3 will stage a quadrophic situation at the APA building. The stereo channels of both radio stations are split into mono channels which allows them to be triggered individually. The aim is to create an effect of spacial sound.
