LIVE aus dem Medienturm in Graz

Der Medienturm in Graz beherbergt im Herbst einen elektromagnetischen Raum in Form einer Video- und Soundinstallation, die vom niederländischen Videokünstler Bas van Koolwijk und Derek Holzer, Soundkünstler aus den USA, gestaltet wurde. Sie gehen mit dieser Arbeit der Frage nach jenen Signalen und Wellen nach, die uns zwar erreichen, die wir mit unseren Sinnen allerdings nicht wahrnehmen können. Auf vier Monitoren ist ein stets sich veränderndes Spektrum an Videosignalstörungen zu sehen; in einer Art von Kettenreaktion werden diese Störungen durch Bild- und Soundsignale erzeugt: speziell gebaute Antennen fangen die elektromagnetischen Strahlen, die von den Monitoren ausgehen, ein und wandeln sie in Töne um, die wiederum weitere Videostörungen hervorrufen. Dank der Natur von elektromagnetischen Radiowellen beeinflußt jede Person, die die Installation betritt, das Verhältnis von Bild und Ton, den Fluß der Störungen. Sie wird so hochgradig interaktiv.

Für die Ausstellung haben Acoustic.Space.Lab (Lettland) und das Ö1 Kunstradio eine Auswahl an themenverwandten Arbeiten getroffen, die auf mehreren Hörstationen abrufbar sind.

Für die heutige Kunstradio-Sendung werden Derek Holzer und Bas van Koolwijk in einer live Performance eine Stereo-Radioversion der Vierkanal-Installation schaffen: Ein Kreislauf an Signalen und Sounds vom digitalen Videosignal, den Bas van Koolwijk erzeugt, der am analogen Monitor abgespielt wird, dort mittels einer speziellen Software in Sound umgewandelt und am Computer von Derek Holzer digital bearbeitet und schließlich als analoger Soundsignal wiederum das digitale Videosignal beeinflußt.

LIVE from the Medienturm in Graz

In our daily life, we are literally awash in a shifting tide of signals, frequencies and codes. Our eyes and ears can receive some small part of these, and pass them along for our brains to interpret. But what of the rest? Those signals which reach us, and even pass through our very bodies, on a level which the flesh is not sensitive enough to detect unaided?

OZONE is an immersive electromagnetic environment created by video artist Bas van Koolwijk [NL] and sound artist Derek Holzer [NL/US] for the Medienturm Graz in order to address this question. Four video monitors display an ever-changing array of video signal disturbances. The electromagnetic waves created by the monitors are captured by a series of specially-constructed antennae, and then converted to sound which is processed and spatialized over a 4.1 channel loudspeaker system. The sound, in turn, goes on to create further video signal disturbances, and an ongoing chain reaction ensues. Because of the nature of radio waves, every person or object in the room influences the relationship of sound to image, making the installation both immersive and interactive.

To complement the installation, the artists have invited Kunstradio/ORF and Acoustic.Space.Lab to curate a collection of works related to the field of radio-art and electromagnetic exploration. These works reflect an approach to radio waves beyond the usual application of mass communcations which considers them as both intelligable signal and as raw material for artistic intervention. The works can be heard on listening stations within the exhibition.

Selection:

Tonight, Derek Holzer and Bas van Koolwijk will interact and play with the present acoustic situation in the Medienturm, composing a live radioversion for the Kunstradio broadcast. In their live performance they will create a stereo radioversion of the four-channel installation: A loop of signals and sounds circulate - beginning with digital video signals triggered by Bas van Koolwijk entering the analogue monitor where due to a special software they are transferred into sound; Derek Holzer processes these with his computer and sends them as analogue sound signals back to the the point of beginning, the digital video.
