When it rattles rapidly, it turns on green; when it rattles slowly, it turns on red. It's so simple - at least the Austrian version. We're talking about so-called "Talking crosswalks" - acoustic traffic lights for blind people - to be found around the world between Melbourne and Montreal, from small villages in Patagonia to Vladivostok.
Since March 2003, various versions of these traffic signals which, in the United States, are poetically called talking crosswalks have marked the beginning of the weekly Kunstradio programme for almost a year.

As part of a sinnlos project, artists from around the globe were invited to record these minimalistic "signal symphonies" which sound quite differently from country to country (and can have quite differing meanings, too), to sample them and either to add their artistic statements or just leave them as they are, as pure field recordings. In total, the 34 such sound miniatures were compiled and are now also available on a brand new CD release which can also be ordered via Kunstradio.

Today's programme will recapitulate this collection of sonic postcards and will - in fast forward, condensed modus - take the listeners around the globe once more; Graz is the beginning and ending point of this trip lead by acoustic signals which sometimes sound familiar and well-known and then, again, are exotic and strange sounding traces.

A project by sinnlos in collaboration with Ö1 Kunstradio.
