[ English Version]

[ Deutsche Version]

A composition based on texts by Antonio Gramsci, Giacomo Leopardi, and Pier Paolo Pasolini. The Austrian composer and performer Olga Neuwirth and Italian radio artist Roberto Paci Dalò have elaborated a special radio version of their composition "Italia Anno Zero" for Kunstradio which was performed as concert within the Wien Modern Festival this November.

This mutual project - a concert for theremin, clarinets, sampler, electronics, and e-guitar - is based on explorations of texts by Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937), Italian philosopher, author, activist, and communist, Giacomo Leopardi, an Italian 19th century poet, and Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975), Italian film director and also communist.

Gramsci, Leopardi, and Pasolini all lived on the edge of the Italian society and their poetical-linguistic analyses of social and political structures of their respective eras can still be applied to Italian society today.

"Italia Anno Zero" circles around the thesis according to which Italy is not only a post-fascist country, but also and above all a pre-fascist country. The reason for this is the phenomenon of fascism which is (still) present throughout all social classes of Italian society, and which dates back to an era before the Italian state was established in the 19th century.

The text analyses serve as basis for the dense musical structure of this composition. The voices speaking the text fragments are exclusively electronic samples, amongst others - and cut up into acoustic fragments - also Mussolini's voice; thanks to its fragmentation it is free and emptied of any meaning, even if, as a sound, it is still immediately effective.

To put it with a film still of Rosselini: Italia Anno Zero is born from the rubble of the present.
