ääniradio was a week-long experiment in radio, occurring in April 2005 in
conjunction with the hybrid radio workshop at pixelache festival in Helsinki,
Finland. During this week, over 20 artists from around the globe met to share
their individual practices in radio, to collaborate, and experiment with new
methods of recording, producing and editing for broadcast. The event's
organizers obtained a temporary FM license from the city council of Helsinki;
the participants broadcasted around the clock with both live and automated
content. On the air, one could hear a broad range of broadcasts including a
live cooking show, spontaneous open studio collaborations, participatory shows
such as streetradio and userradio, several live concerts, and a host of open
content creative audio and original radio art contributed or curated by
particle/wave participants.
Additionally, the week afforded time and place to experiment with radio
infrastructures, including various low-budget, hands-on techniques and
routines.
This short compilation of sound bits and interviews stems from two artists'
experiences at the festival. In it, August Black and Bo Bell attempt to capture
an audible portrait of the week's events, including thoughts and feedback from
the participants as well as sound samples from the city and the from the
festival's concerts and workshops.
