„Landscape Soundings – Klanglandschaften“ war ein von Fontana initiiertes Großprojekt, das er 1990 mit Unterstützung des Kunstradios und der Wiener Festwochen in Wien umsetzte. Die Klangwelt einer weitgehend unberührten Natur transportierte Fontana auf den Maria-Theresien-Platz in Wien, jenen Platz, der von zwei Seiten von pompösen Museen umgeben ist und von den anderen beiden Seiten von stark frequentierten Straßen. Als Klangquelle dienten ihm die Donauauen bei Hainburg, die im Frühling von Vogelstimmen, Froschgequake, Insektensummen und Wasserplätschern widerhallen.
16 Mikrophone wurden auf Bäumen in der Stopfenreuther Au platziert und übertrugen die Naturgeräusche, denen Bill Fontana eine musikalische Qualität zuschreibt, live ins Zentrum der Großstadt. „Als ich während „Landscape Soundings“ die Au-Klänge am Maria-Theresien-Platz hörte“, sagt der Künstler, „stellte ich mir vor, welche Klang-Perspektiven ein Vogel erfahren muss, während er diese Geräusche produziert.“ Von der Intimität dieser Hör-Erfahrung ist Fontana noch heute beeindruckt.
Für die Ars Electronica 2007 unternimmt Bill Fontana eine akustische Erinnerung an „Landscape Soundings“. Aus dem aufgenommenen Live-Material erstellt er eine neue räumliche Komposition, die im Donaupark in Linz erklingt.

“In May of 1990, I spent many hours in the control room for Landscape Soundings that had been setup in the basement of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. I made extensive stereo recordings that were multi-channel mixes from the live sounds coming from the Hainburger Au. This was a unique project in its acoustic surveillance of a wetland habitat. At that time, and as I now revisit these recordings, I am struck by the sonic intimacy with nature that Landscape Soundings had created.

In creating this sound sculpture I created a real-time musical information network consisting of 16 microphones placed in area of the Hainburger Au that transmitted live sound to Vienna. This sound surveillance network became part of the forest and made it possible to hear this wetland from the perspective of the trees. There was no apparent human presenc to cause the shy and wary avian residents to keep a safe distance. As cuckoos sat near a microphone and were amplified through a 70 speaker installation, they became bigger than life, or maybe as big as their life itself. With my normal humanly embodied acoustic experiences while walking through this wetland, these sounds were always at a distance that was safe for the birds. Listening to these transmitted sounds at the mixing console or in the Maria-Theresien-Platz made me imagine what the sonic perspectives that bird must have while making and becoming these sounds.

The various recordings I made from the original live installation are now the source material for a new spatial composition that will move and echo on the grounds outside of the Brucknerhaus in Linz.”

Am Samstag, den 8. September 2007 spricht Fontana über seine bisherigen Arbeiten um 19:00 im mobilen Ö1-Atelier am Linzer Hauptplatz.

Im Linzer Donaupark ist von Sonntag, dem 9. September bis Dienstag, dem 11. September jeweils von 9:00 - 22:00 Bill Fontana's Acoustic Memories of Landscape Soundings zu hören.

Am Sonntag, dem 9. September 2007 wird um 11:00 im IMA Salon #7 07, Marienstrasse 7, Linz im Rahmen der Portrait-Serie IMA fiction des Insitituts für Medienarchäologie (IMA) portrait #3 Heidi Grundmann von Roberto Paci Dalò präsentiert.

Im Anschluss daran werden Projekte aus dem 20 jährigen Bestehen des Kunstradios, sowie die Ausstellung Art on Air und das neue Archiv für Radiokunst am Studienzentrum für Künstlerpublikationen / ASPC
am Neuen Museum Weserburg Bremen vorgestellt und die Problematik der Archivierung von Radiokunst diskutiert.

Ausserdem gibt es Diskussionen, Installationen und Performances von RadiokünstlerInnen wie Sam Auinger, Seppo Gruendler, Reni Hofmüller, Josef Klammer, Roberto Paci Dalò, Liu Pei Wen , Elisabeth Schimana, Andrea Sodomka, Peter Szely, Eva Ursprung, Eva Wohlgemuth, etc u.a. werden im IMA Salon und im Rahmen des Ars Electrconica Schwerpunktes A day in the city.
