As stated in their jingle, Radia is a “group of stations bringing new and forgotten ways of making radio to [their] listeners. Each week [they] give artists the challenge to make radio that works all across Europe and beyond.” Since April 2005, each and every week, the ten-country listeners of the Radia network’s stations experience a radio-art show that intends to cross boundaries and address people of different languages and cultures. The reasons for forming a network were many, but Radia has become a concrete manifestation of the desire to use radio as an art form and the goal of a media space where something different can happen.

Every station in turns – Rádio Zero (Lisbon), Resonance104.4fm (London), Radio Corax (Halle), Orange (Vienna), Kanal 103 (Skopje), Radio Campus and Radio Panik (Brussels), Radio Grenouille (Marseille), Tilos Radio (Budapest), free103point9 (New York), SounDart Radio (Dartington), Lemurie TAZ (Prague), Reboot.fm (Berlin) – commissions an artist from its cultural surroundings and makes the artist’s work broadcast by all the others. From time to time, Radia also organizes live link-up events such as ‘Radioactive Radiophony’ at the Radiophonic 2007 festival in Brussels, presenting in-situ and remote performances during a four-hour show.

Kunstradio asked Etienne Noiseau from the crew of Radio Grenouille in Marseille for a selection of recent pieces from Radia. He replied with a three-show series that would include the best pieces (to his opinion) of all the Radia stations during the 2006-2007 period. With Floriane Pochon who is the presenter of the weekly Radia show on Radio Grenouille, they selected fourteen pieces, i.e. one piece per Radia station during the period.

Then Etienne selected one relevant excerpt per piece. He based his choice only on sound affinities and combined all the excerpts one another into three pieces so as to form “3 journeys through Radia”.

After that, Etienne realised in surprise that each journey works on a traditional radio genre and explores the diverse possible interpretations of them:
1 – Collage (and also manipulation, mix, masking effect, etc.)
2 – Fiction (drama, subjectivity and personal perception or interpretation of facts)
3 – Soundscape (from natural to artificial and abstract)

The last stage consisted for Floriane in writing an invitation/introduction for each show as if they were new original pieces. In the same way, special graphic work was made by visual artist Etienne Rey, inspired by the listening of the new pieces.

“3 journeys through Radia” present a retrospective of the network’s recent activities as well as a panorama of contemporary radio-art, according to the Radia jingle’s last words: “are you up for it?”

JOURNEY 1:

First journey through the universe of Radia,
Possibly, as if, sometimes, we could take the time to give us space,
Possibly, as if the world could twist and re-form itself, dissolve or burst in snatches of universes that last a few seconds and then get lost in a multitude of temporary eternities.

First steps out of line, somewhere along these lines of sight that render any running away impossible, and necessary, dangerous and salutary.

First stage,
Possibly, as if we could fill up digestive and cathode-ray tubes, as if we could fall down through vertical skylines and eventually, possibly, feed ghost towns where resound the leprous shades of memory, inner crowds fooling around.

First wandering,
Possibly, as if we could think into familiar voices that cancel us out, beating time excesses,
Possibly, as if a wave of reminiscences could hold us up, back ground swell of sounds.

First deviance,
Possibly, as if people of a sound mind could soon be driven mad but not sad, even if… a fit of laughter…

So what's the point?
That of no return, of course, because sometimes, we can't get over it, and it sounds as a spell.
