The artist Herbert Distel was born in 1942 in Bern, Switzerland. He lived in Campiglia/Marittima, Italy, for 10 years and now he lives in Katzelsdorf, Lower Austria. Distel is not only known for his sound works, but also as painter, sculptor, filmmaker, video artist and conceptual artist.

As opposed to his sculptural works, Distel's sound and video pieces are received outside of traditional art institutions. However, to read this as a break in terms of content and artistic development, would be wrong.

The 18-minutes-video piece "die angst die macht die bilder des zauberlehrlings" (1993) got numerous international awards and gained Herbert Distel the reputation as an artist with a sense for the possible, who investigates and defends the imaginary.

Kunstradio presents Distel's 2004 radio piece "Soundtrack", which reverses the common procedure of first shooting a film and then compiling a soundtrack: similar to "die angst die macht die bilder des zauberlehrlings", Distel creates the visualisation only after having finished the soundtrack. In the hierarchy of senses, Distel thus clearly prefers sound to image.

"Soundtrack" is a synopsis of to previous radio pieces, "Die Reise" (1985) and "La Stazione" (1990), both of which use the train journey as a metaphor for life.
