„The Sound of Night“, sometimes deeply hidden, on other locations loudly and high-spirited, shows also pensive, friendly or dangerous, exotic, intimate or enigmatic surfaces. Composer and sound artist Thomas Gerwin works in his radiophonic composition „Night Journey“ on the sounds of the night and musically investigates there diverse facettes, figures and meanings. This piece will face its world premiere on December 21st, 2008 on SWR2 as part of „The Sound of Night“, a 3 hour live radio mix. This new work, aesthetically wandering between soundscape composition, Musique concrète and ars acustica will be broadcasted this very night in stereo as well as in 5.1 multichannel format.

Distinct aspects and cultural themes focussing „Solitude“, „Entertainment“, „Crime“, „Love“, „Information“, „Voices of the Night“ (Focus on human voices) and „Animals at Night“ (in the city, on the country side, at night time at a zoo, etc.) are inspiration and provide material for a humorous, silent, mysterious, slow and partly meteoric journey through the wide night world. Travelling situations structure and give a linking balance to the flow of events. „Night Journey“ is a „Sound Art Suite“ made of original sounds (O-Ton) and acoustic creatures of the night. The sounding materials and situations are partly edited only very softly and respectfully, some other sounds are extremely processed with analog and digital procedures. Some parts contain particles of live recorded concerts, sometimes the artist has played live with and according to the prerecorded and through computer processed material. These mixtures are then mixed and edited in the sound studio again.

„Nachtreise“ (Night Journey) was broadcast on SWR2 on Sunday, Dezember 21st, 2008 at 10:03 p.m. as part of 'Der Klang der Nacht - Natur, Zivilisation und Gewalt' (Sound of the Night - Nature, Civilization and Force) and is part of the exchange program “Listening Proposals” of Ars Acustica.
