ART'S
BIRTHDAY is an annual event first proposed on January 17th 1963 by
French Fluxus artist Robert Filliou. He suggested that 1,000,000 years
ago "A man took a dry sponge and dropped it into a bucket full of
water. Who that man was is not important. He is dead but art is alive."
Each year, artists and art organizations worldwide celebrate
Art’s Birthday as an open, flexible and interconnected event.
Since 2004, the members of Ars Acustica (the EBU’s radio art
group), cooperate in this network.
In 2010, the 1,000.047th year of Art’s existence, Kunstradio joins forces with the project “Social Sound Systems” and the artist-run-space ESC in the Austrian regional capital Graz for a two-day-birthday-celebration including performances, media installations, a panel discussion, concerts etc. on site, and extending the “Fete Permanente” with the Art’s Birthday network on air and online. Curated by artist Andrea Sodomka, “Social Sound Systems” works primarily with sound reinforcement systems, sound systems, and sound situations that exist in public space. This means making use of the existing frequency space in all of its manifestations in the Styria region. “Social Sound Systems” works with artists who draw attention to these systems by (mis)using them for their own ideas. This also means not setting up new sound sculptures, sound installations, sound situations, but rather taking advantage of those that already exist in public space and using – and of course undermining – their functionality. Amongst the projects incorporated into Kunstradio’s Art’s Birthday event is the performance of George Brecht’s 1960 composition “Motor Vehicle Sundown” by the acclaimed new music orchestra “die reihe”. Brecht, deceased in December 2008, was an American conceptual artist and avant-garde composer, as well as a friend and collaborator of Art’s Birthday initiator Robert Filliou. “Motor Vehicle Sundown” is played with headlights, parking lights, sound horns, car radios, windows, doors etc. of parked cars, following a score of verbal instructions. Whilst this event takes place at an outside location, the space of ESC in the centre of Graz will provide a node for the exterior projects as well as a platform for live performances and radio concerts by Reni Hofmüller, Seppo Gründler, Winfried Ritsch, Heimo Ranzenbacher, Clara Oppel, Peter Venus, Daniel Lercher, Andrea Sodomka, J. Raggam + C. Pointner, Christof Cargnelli, Norbert Math, Pure Data Graz and other congratulators. The live broadcast from 22.30 till midnight includes sound bits and pieces from these performances as well as from other events going on worldwide.
