With countless performances, concerts and celebrations going on in many parts of the world, Art’s Birthday is a decentralised, ever evolving and changing network, happening each year on 17th January. To create an “Eternal Network” was the vision of the French Fluxus Artist Robert Filliou, when he initiated the Art’s Birthday in 1963. Together with other radio art programs of national-public broadcasting institutions in Europe, Kunstradio constitutes the Ars Acustica group within the European Broadcasting Union EBU, and since 2006, its members work together on an Art’s Birthday structure alongside the existing programs. On 17th January, the Ars Acustica has the opportunity to use the EBU’s satellite channels Ravel und Verdi for transmitting and exchanging radio art works dedicated to Art and its Birthday.

Deutschlandradio Kultur invited the media artist, sound futurist and performer Felix Kubin to play at the Berghain Club in Berlin.

“Test signals” was accompanied by the dancer Veronika Zott and its description reads as follows: “Test signals are not exactly popular. We automatically think of broadcast breaks and geometrical images. The sound qualities of test signals range from peak tones over sweeps and white noise all the way to vocal sounds and sound check blabber. They are associated with a state of being before the actual program starts. They’re doomed to stay on hold for optimization. For Art’s Birthday, sound futurist Felix Kubin from Hamburg and Vienna based performer Veronika Zott set the test signals free from the prison of functionality and condense them to a composition of interval symbols, extreme frequencies, voicing methods and sound costume movements.”

“Viral Radio” was a performance and radio project, including many intertwined elements and parts, transmitted live on air, online and – part of it – via satellite. Instead of playing solo sets, the musicians performed together and created a beautiful 20 minutes performance, definitely one of the finest parts of the evening. With Jorge Sanchez-Chiong, Kid606, Thomas Wagensommerer, Martin Siewert and Pure.
