Paul Skrepeks "Kasperlmaschine" is a miraculous construction made of instruments, toys, scrap material and various found objects. It buzzes, rattles, twinkles and whirs, it produces soap bubbles, paints pictures and sometimes it even mixes cocktails.

It all started some 25 years ago, when musician and composer Paul Skrepek found a punch doll, a so-called Kasperl, and wanted to make it play drums. Since then, it has grown into a huge, spectacular sound machine, constructed out of objects like washer drums, bicycle parts, violin bows, waving plastic hands, Barbie dolls and a whole lot more.

Paul Skrepek and his machinist Andreas Platzer use the Kasperlmaschine as an instrument for their performance – for example at Kunstradio’s 2016 Art’s Birthday Party on 17th January 2016, at the ORF Funkhaus in Vienna. The Machine was set up in Studio 3 and played three times. Kunstradio broadcasts the multi-channel recordings of these three performances as a 5.1 radio mix.
