“Sound and the City – Moscow City Ballet”
by Dmitry Nikolaev and Oleg Makarov

sound PLAY

Dmitry Nikolaev’s and Oleg Makarov’s radio composition “Sound and the City” is a City Ballet based on the actual atmospheric sounds of Moscow.

“Composing the piece we used the Borscht Method: Different ingredients – transport, animals, people, weather, etc. – are mixed in the pot and then carefully cooked together until they become ‘edible’. In the ballet context this means ‘danceable’. The basic idea is to represent the city soundscape as a body movement, and the main ambition is to appeal not only to listeners' ears but involve the whole body into the rhythm and music of the city. This sound piece is one of the sketches made for the future dance stage performance. Music of City Ballet combines the traditions of field recordings and musique concrète with classical ballet music forms via contemporary sound technologies.”
