KUNSTRADIO - RADIOKUNST

Ö1 Museum of Masterpieces:
ACOUSTIC.SPACE.LAB

Wiederholung der Sendung vom 12.8.2001

A giant radio telescope on a hillside near Irbene in Latvia, formerly used for military observation by the Soviet Army, was the location of an artistic experiment in August 2001. Kunstradio was a platform for the results of the Acoustic Space Lab, including a live broadcast from the closing event on 12th August. An extraordinary radio show with extraterrestrial sounds – we have chosen this program to be repeated in the framework of Radio Ö1’s Museum of Masterpieces. This is a museum for radiophonic masterpieces of the last 50 years, produced since the foundation of Ö1 to celebrate the anniversary. We consider Acoustic Space Lab a masterpiece not only because of the spectacular site of creation, but also because of the innovative use of transmission media: radio frequencies, satellite signals and internet-livestreams were defined and used as a specific form of media art. This allowed artists to take part, who were not present on site.

Organised by re-lab, ACOUSTIC.SPACE.LAB brought together international radio-art-practicioners and theorists to "receive sounds from outer space or more terrestrial sources and incorporate those into soundart pieces, whether they are music ....or even some sort of architecture which is built up from these different frequencies, ...to hold a symposium about the idea of radio frequencies as a specific form of new media, to.........share ideas, technologies and different visions for how you can use radio transmissions.... as a form of new media. " (Derek Holzer).

In the Kunstradio broadcast from 12th August 2001, presented by Ursula Strubinsky, there is an audio report by Honor Harger and artistic contributions by First Floor, Peteris Kimelis and FON, August Black and Manfred Söllner. And there is a talk with artist Robert Adrian (1935-2015), who vividly recounts his experiences with the telescope in Irbene.
