This year’s edition of the Phonofemme Festival is dedicated to Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), musician, composer, pioneer of electronic music and founder of Deep Listening. It takes place in Vienna between 20th and 22nd October 2017, at Tonspur-Passage in MuseumsQuartier, at Café Korb, and with a live-radio performance as the closing event on Ö1 Kunstradio.

Phonofemme, the international platform for contemporary musicians in sound art and experimental music, has been dedicated to redressing the balance of the under-representation of women in music and strengthening the public perception of women in the arts since 2009. The festival is a forum for new work and unites artists from different countries in a creative process of collaborative exchange.

Sound Art is inherently interdisciplinary and covers audio technologies, acoustics and psychoacoustics, electronic music etc. It is often manifested in hybrid forms such as noise, soundscapes, found footage and field recordings or explorations of the sonic expression of the human body. Sound art is deeply involved in the contemporary aesthetic discourse.

Phonofemme 2017 is dedicated to Pauline Oliveros (1932 - 2016), the celebrated US-american composer, pioneer of electronic music and founder of the Deep Listening Institute. Mia Zabelka, the festivals's curator, who enjoyed a long friendship and numerous collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, has brought together friends and students from all over the world to pay tribute to the great American composer, accordionist and thinker in Vienna: Maria Chavez (PE/US), Maia Urstad (NO), Doug Van Nort (US/CA), Ingrid Plum (UK), Zahra Mani (AT/UK),  Meriheini Luoto & mi:rage: Covered by Forest (FI), Andrea Sodomka (AT), DJ Spooky -That Subliminal Kid (US), and Kristine Tjogersen & the Tøyen Fil og Klafferi quartet (NO).
