Philip Corner


Born in New York in 1933.
He trained as a composer at the City College in New York with Mark Brunswick, was under Messiaen s influence at the Paris Conservatoire (1956-57) and was a student of Henry Cowell s at Columbia University. Hismusic is also indebted to non-western cultures, specially Indonesian Gamelan music. Since the start of the sixties he has taken part in the activities of Fluxus and important experimental groups, such as the Judson Dance Theater. As a pianist and trombonist he has performed works of many contemporary authors. He has taught at the New Lincoln School in New York. His visual works includind visual scores and drawings- has been shown in many museums. Since 1992 he lives in Reggio Emilia (Italy).
