Helen Hahmann is a radiomaker, soundhunter and radioactivist from the Community Radio Station CORAX in Halle/Saale. In her recent radio documentaries she presented the whistled language El Silbo of the Canary Islands, the street organs from the cuban city Bayamo and the diverse cosmos of jew´s harp playing from around the world. Her documentaries are also broadcasted by public radio stations in Germany and Switzerland. She´s been traveling through the Peruvian Andes recording saxophone orchestras and the natural trumpet Wakrapuku. As a Bariton Saxophonist she has played Big Band Jazz for almost ten years. Nowadays Hahmann primarily is drawn to improvised music with her voice, on zithers, saxophones and diverse percussion instruments. She´s a member of the board of Radio CORAX and as thus involved in the coordination of festivals, conferences and EU-projects to strengthen the role of community radios in societies.

Helen Hahmann ist gelernte Musikethnologin mit einem Faible für sonderbare Musikinstrumente. Sonderbar im Sinne von selten. Sonderbar aber auch im Sinne erwartete Spieltechniken über Bord zu werfen oder schlicht der jeweiligen Örtlichkeit neue Instrumente abzuringen. Für die Radio Revolten spielt sie u.a. Baritonsaxophon, Zither, Fluchttreppen-Klangröhren, Großküchen-Topfdeckel-Becken und Bauholz-Xylophon. Seit über 10 Jahren schreibt und produziert Helen Hahmann Musikfeature und -reportagen, die die Stimmen jener Musiker_innen hörbar machen, die jenseits der globalen Musikmärkte agieren. Für ihre Radioarbeiten durchstöbert sie die Tonarchive nach alten Feldaufnahmen. Ihre Sendungen leuchten die Dimensionen akustisch generierter Klänge aus. Mit dem nichtkommerziellen Radio CORAX in Halle koordiniert sie außerdem regelmäßig Festivals, Konferenzen und EU-Projekte mit dem erklärten Ziel Community Radios in ihren lokalen Infrastrukturen und innerhalb überregionaler Netzwerke zu stärken.
