als Komponistin die amerikanische und internationale Musiklandschaft durch
ihre Arbeit mit Improvisation und experimentellen Performances innerhalb
der Elektronic Music weitreichend geprägt und beeinflußt.
Sie gilt heute als eine der bedeutendsten KomponistInnen des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Sie wird in vielen Zusammenhängen mit John Cage vergleichen, aus dessen musikalischem Umfeld sie auch kommt.
Pauline Oliveros describes her life as a composer, performer and humanitarian as being about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the many facets of sound. Since the 1960's her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual have placed her on the forefront of the international contemporary music scene. Many credit her with founding present day meditative music. Her work combines an emphasis on musicianship, attentional strategies, and improvisational skills. John Rockwell named her work "Bye Bye Butterfly"as one of the most significant of the 1960's. During the 80's she was honored with a retrospective at Kennedy Center. She composed the original music and sound for "Njinga the Queen King", a play with music and pageantry by playwright lone, which premiered at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1993. Her work is available on over 20 recordings.
