Steve Roden


steve roden is a visual and sound artist from los angeles. his work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, film/video, and sound. the works are a combination of conceptual strategies and intuitive movements. found structures and systems are lifted from their original intentions and used as the basis for improvisation and abstraction. in the visual works, printed language, graphic design, maps, and other forms of visual notation are lifted from their original intentions and abstracted to create open readings. in the sound works; objects, architectural spaces, and field recordings, are abstracted through electronics to create audio new spaces, or 'possible landscapes'. these sound works present themselves with an aesthetic roden describes as 'lower case'' - sound concerned with subtlety and the quiet activity of listening. the la weekly recently called roden "the most idiosyncratic abstract painter to emerge from l.a. in the 90's"; while the wire magazine recently referred to roden's cd 'the radio' as "a particularly modest form of genius", and included it in it's best of 2000 experimental cd's.

roden has been exhibiting his visual and sound installation works since 1986. he has had numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including museums, galleries and arts spaces in usa, italy, france, japan, bulgaria, slovenia, england, etc. recent shows include the ucla armand hammer museum; the mak center for art and architecture los angeles; the drawing center, nyc; the jennjoy gallery, san francisco, kunsthallen brandts klaedefabrik, odense, denmark, podewil, berlin, germany; the asu university art museum, tempe arizona; refusalon, san francisco; studio 5 beekman, nyc, ny; INMO gallery los angeles; the guardshack, santa monica california; and others. his visual and sound work has appeared in catalogs, museum publications, magazines and newspaper reviews internationally.

roden has performed live improvised soundscapes in arts spaces, galleries, museums, theatres, and other alternative spaces worldwide including the san francisco museum of modern art; the ica & the hayward gallery, london; the walker art center, minneapolis; logos, gent, belgium; the musee de beaux artes nantes; lace, los angeles; ducal palace, gubbio italy; zenkoji temple, osaka; uplink, tokyo. sound festivals include the international symposium on electronic arts (isea) in england; musique ultimes festival in france; interzone one in japan; sampling rage in berlin; en red o in barcelona; and others. recently roden presented his filmwork 'book of seconds' at cinema nova in brussels with live sound accompaniment.

roden has released several cd's under his own name, as well as under the name 'in be tween noise' on various labels, including bernhard gunter's trente oiseaux, germany; sonoris, france; gmbh, france; digital narcis and meme from japan. roden's work has appeared on a number of international compilations, including the tulpas project on selektion, germany. in 1999, roden co-edited the publication 'site of sound - of architecture and the ear' - an exploration of the relationships between sound and architecture, with contributions from various architects, sound artists and critics including christina kubisch and pierre koenig.

roden received an mfa from art center college of design in pasadena, ca in 1989, and a bfa from otis parsons in los angeles in 1986.

upcoming projects include the 'snapshot / new art from los angeles' show at the ucla hammer museum and miami moca. a site specific sound installation at the schindler house / mak center for art and architecture in los angeles. a cd project done in collaboration with architect tadao ando related to his water temple in japan. a video installation at OCMA museum in newport, ca. as part of the 'one wall' series. a sound performance and installation at the transmissions festival in chicago. a solo exhibition of visual and sound works at the santa barbara contemporary arts forum in spring of 2002.
