" 1969 Wil Frenken prepared an exhibition for a small gallery in Graz. At this time it was not so much the personal expression of the artist which was in demand but his efforts to animate the audience. That is how instead of artworks on the walls of the gallery there were boxes with sand and pots with paint were standing around the gallery. (I was also of the opinion that this was socially desirable). So the exhibition turned into a happening for children and the young at heart. Unfortunately a writer through a handful of sand into my philips-magnetofone, which survived the incident unharmed. I constructed a sound which I liked and whch fulfilled my ideas of density. I added a few ironic statements.

Today sounds of this type are manufactured in a different way. I consider myself as somebody pointing towards something, as somebody emphasising a certain marginalised attitude. What else should I do?" (H.H., 2000)

"spät im jahr 1969 hatte Wil Frenken eine ausstellung für eine kleine galerie in Graz vorbereitet. damals war weniger der persönliche einsatz eines künstlers wichtig, als dessen vermeintliche animation. so kam es, dass an stelle von kunstwerken an der wand, sandkästen und farbtöpfe in der galerie herumstanden. (Ich war auch der meinung, dies sei gesellschaftlich sinnvoll). so war es eigentlich ein grosses happening für kinder und entsprechend junggebliebene. leider schmiss ein unverbesserlicher grazer literat eine handvoll sand in mein philips-magnetophon, was keinen schaden nahm. (der abend war durch weitere werfaktionen gekennzeichnet!) ich bastelte eben einen ton daher, der mir gefiel, und der meinen ansprüchen an dichtheit entsprach. und zusätzlich packte ich meine ironischen statements dazu, das war`s denke ich. heute werden solche "töne" anders hergestellt, ich fühle mich als hinweiser, als betoner einer gewissen abseitigen haltung, was sollte ich sonst?"
