Contribution Description:
A soundscape and interviews recorded in Denpasar Bali in July this year by Balinese composer and sound artist I Wayan Gede Yudane (You-Darn-a). Built around the crossroads in the centre of the city, Yudane is exploring the place of the crossroads in Balinese mythology and culture. The crossroads are the site where the spiritual or 'upper' world merges with the material world. The four-faced statue of the God Brahma stands at the centre - but the need for the space or 'Pumbang', the vacant space needed by the spirit world is crowded out by commercial billboards and advertising hoardings. The crossroads which remain as an important site for cremations and weddings, have also been the site for historical change...first under Dutch Colonialism (who erected a clock tower), and later under Indonesian nationalism. Now it is the site for student protest and dissent...
In this piece we hear the voices of student leader Juniarta and noted musician and scholar Oka Suparta.
