Shimon Adaf []
Biography:

Shimon Adaf (Israel, 1972)was born in and grew up in Sderot, a small town in southern Israel with a predominantly North African immigrant population. Most of these, including Shimon Adaf’s parents, are from Morocco. Adaf’s background plays a dominant part in his writing. As a child he was, in his own words, ‘condemned to writing poetry’ because breathing problems prevented him from engaging in more physical activities. After military service he and two friends from Sderot formed a rock band, Ha-atsula (‘Aristocracy’) and moved to Tel Aviv. His first and, so far, only collection of poems appeared in 1997, and received an incentive prize from the Education Ministry. From then on he concentrated on the written word. For two years he wrote articles on literature, film and rock music for the literature section of Israels leading newspaper. He also continues to write songs. Currently he works as literary editor for the Keter publishing company. In response to questions about his poetry, Adaf quotes his favourite singer-songwriter Patricia Monday: ‘A writer needs some kind of excuse, / so this is mine: / I lack the gift of being loved / like any other living creature / I am good at withering. / A complete mythology / builds up under my fingernails. / Watching people, / their darkness approaching, is a pain whose temptation / I can no longer resist.’
