ao3 is the result of a project of interdisciplinary art presentations and productions. The successful project already took place under the same title in 1995 and 1997 at the Künstlerhaus Dortmund and the Dortmund initiative MeX as well as in Gent and Lier. Daniela Swarowsky, an expert for intermedia art projects, who lives in Vienna and New York, worked in 1997 as Austrian guest curator for among others 2 and decided to define the concept anew in order to bring it to Vienna under the title among others 3.

basic concept: communication - interaction - transformation

ao3 focuses on the dialogue between artists from the fields of music and visual arts. Daniela Swarowsky invited 16 international artists and gives them the chance to work in four groups, 12 days each, at Kunsthalle Exnergasse. The central element is the common interaction with the space and the combination of different aesthetic working methods. What is also important is the overlap and interpretation of the concepts and documentation materials (video or sound recordings), which are left by the preceeding groups. Hence, the the main focus lies on the living process, the common development of an intermedia research situation, and not on an exhibition of finished works. What is needed is the sensitivity for spontaneous problem solving and a flexible reaction on unexpected siuations. Since the Kunsthalle Exnergasse is open to the public during the whole project, the participation and inclusion of visitors is also intended.
On four evenings (May 5, 12, 19, and 26), the developed concepts and results will be presented to the newly arriving artists' group. Within the three following days, both groups work simultaneously, with the possibility to hand over or dissolve parts of the work of the previous group, and begin with a new interpretation of the existing material, which will be integrated into the new concept.

Since many of the artists are curators themselves or running experimental art initiatives (e.g. Mex/Dortmund, Künstlerhaus/Dortmund, Metamkine/Grenoble, the Institution of Rot/London, Experimental Intermedia/NY, Vorkaamer/ Lier, Alien Action/NY), ao3 should also lead to the networking and distribution of intermedia art forms.

ao3 will be extended to the internet by a team from Kunstradio (live real audio & live camera). At Kunsthalle Exnergasse, there is a web studio which documents the whole working process on the internet, which also features contributions by the artists.
