Baggage Allowance
a layered sonic work in multiple interlocking movements
Drawing from samples of interviews for an
in-progress performance and sound installation work (Baggage
Allowance), this radio piece focuses on possessions, attachment, loss,
and treasure, and explores the "ball & chain" nature of dragging
ones belongings across the globe. The work is composed, edited,
and performed by Pamela Z and includes the composer's own voice along
with samples of the speaking voices of Mary Armentrout, Bill
Ballou, Elisabeth Beaird, Elena-Mariá Bey, Elaine
Buckholtz, Moshe Cohen, Marion Gray, Hannah
Kahn, Wendy Levi, Guy Livingston, Alessandro
Moruzzi, Janet Silke, Amy Trachtenberg, Beth
Warshafsky, and Karin Wikström. The piano part of the "Notice
of Baggage Inspection" segment was performed by Guy Livingston. The
text from that section was taken from the copy on Transportation
Security Administration (TSA) notices often inserted in people's
luggage. The text for "The Perfect Wardrobe" was taken from "A Guide to
Elegance" by Genevieve Antoine Dariaux. All music composed
by Pamela Z (ASCAP, Last Letter Music) Pamela Z's Baggage
Allowance will premiere as a full evening performance work in San
Francisco and New York in 2010. It will premiere as a sound,
video, and object installation work in Champaign, IL in the same year.
