Born in 1974 in Innsbruck, Matt Smith is an artist who started out as a media designer at the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria in 1995. He left in 1997 to set out on an online diary project on the West Coast of North America. In 1998, he settled in Vancouver, where he has since been working on projects of his own as well as collaboratively with various local and international artists and groups. He also continues to do select contract work for artists and institutions when he is not at the Audio Visual Department of the Vancouver Art Gallery. Highlights have included founding the Artist Run Limousine Collective and the resulting project Audiomobile, which has been performed eight times in six cities since 2003. Before that he was actively involved with all kinds of Internet broad- and narrowcasting adventures, mostly in form of the FirstFlooRadioShow. It was started originally at the Ars Electronica Center as a broadcast on pirate radio relayed to the transmitter via the Internet, eventually becoming a late-night fixture on CITR 101.9 FM in Vancouver for five years between 1999 and 2004, while also being involved in network projects around the world. Currently Matt has been investigating robotics and photography. He is part of the Second Site Collective and has recently exhibited a pond-roaming robot called The Ponderer at VanDusen Gardens in Vancouver.
