Silence Descends is a collaborative project involving seven artists from Vancouver. The artists are working together to produce new audio works describing "the end of the Information Age" - from the beginnings of endless chatter and natural disaster, through the last frontiers of space and time, the depths of the ocean, the processes of death. Somewhere a group of dazed musians crawl out of the rubble and into the future where the Information Age is purely a memory. This ending is described in a book by George Case called "Silence Descends" (Arsenal Pulp Press, Vancouver, 1997). George Case postulates a series of natural and man-made disasters that pull people away from the virtual (the electronic domain of information systems, and the veneer of a consumer driven society) and bring them into a more immediate, physical reality. |
| For Sound Drifting, the artists work with a generative audio system that uses radio style mixing as its metaphor. This system uses long pieces of sound and mixes them with varying degrees of complexity / density. The system tracks its decisions over time to insure that it is using a wide range of styles and possible combinations of the work. |
