Grita
Insam, a renowned gallerist based in Vienna, has passed away on 3rd
June 2012. Internationally considered a pioneer in the art world, she
was active in various fields such as media arts, cultural policy, art
in the public sphere, sound art and performance. Her activities have
reached beyond the gallery space into the public sphere. Friends,
colleagues and artists describe her as a strong, politically engaged
personality, who has dedicated her life to art and its promotion. With
artists such as Art & Language, Peter Weibel, Ruth Schnell, Robert
Adrian and Frantisek Lesak she has collaborated for decades, whilst
always retaining a strong interest in new and upcoming artists. Her
gallery and its experimental, political, intellectual and thus unique
program has enriched the cultural life of Vienna and leaves a void
after its closure in late 2011. Audio Art was a particular focus of Grita Insam's work, with the influential festival „Audioszene '79“ as an early highlight auf sound art in Austria. In the 1970s, when the infrastructure for contemporary art was meagre in Vienna, Insam founded the Modern Art Galerie, which was later renamed. The Galerie Grita Insam had its headquarters in the Köllnerhofgasse in the city center of Vienna, before moving to new premises An der Hülben in 2005. This radio hommage to Grita Insam features excerpts from an interview with her, as well as statements by people she worked with: Ursula Krinzinger, Franziska Leeb, Herwig Kempinger, Melanie Harl, Rosemarie Schwarzwälder, Heidi Grundmann, Gerold Tagwerker and Christa Steinle. We present Audio Art works by Peter Weibel, Tom Marioni, Terry Fox and Joan La Barbara, which Insam published as audio cassettes editions with the title „MAG Magazin“.
