A Radiophonic Reflection on Sound as Protest Ö1 Kunstradio presents the radiophonic live finale of the PhonoFemme Festival, taking place in Slovenia, in Styria, Carinthia and Vienna in November 2023. The thematic focus of this year's PhonoFemme Festival is Voices of Protest, and it demonstrates how art can shape society, reach people and also catalyze social change. Songs and music have also always been a way for minorities to not only communicate, but to also achieve a sense of belonging in a foreign land. As long as there has been music, there has been the protest song, just as music and song have been part of human history from the beginning, so do the different types of protest songs. PhonoFemme wants to use artistic expressions of protest to draw attention to our contemporary social challenges. In recent years, we have faced crises in extraordinary density, showing a growing and widespread need for social cohesion. There is a great deal of despair, but also hope. Art is a voice of that hope. It communicates across borders and ethnic groups. Voices of Protest awakens collective memory and sing or play out of social, environmental, economic, and political initiatives and ideas that reach far beyond the art and cultural world. Desai, Mani and Zabelka collaboratively create a live Kunstradio program on the theme of Voices of Protest in RP4 studio at the Vienna Funkhaus. The three artists bring their instruments (prepared sitar, e-violin, e-bass, electronics) to the studio and combine their individual voices with acoustic reflections from field recordings, original sounds and with excerpts from the live presentations of Voices of Protest, which were heard in October and November in Slovenia, Klagenfurt/Celovec, Graz and Vienna. This joint performance in the radio space focuses on various "voices" of protest, alienates them, re-contextualizes them and thus creates a different, new, extended acoustic moment in the ether. Only in the radio-art-space can such a live process take place and be perceived publicly at the same time. The encapsulated concentration of the three artists from the studio, received live in the private spaces of the listeners, leads to a unique artistic expression of the common protest in, for, and from the radio.
