Ela Hornung: Watching ao3....2

Second week among_others 3: 5.5.-16.5'99: SIMUL/T (Jèrome Noetinger, Lionel Marchetti, Peter Morrens)

une laboratoire ou un musèe?
The entrance is barred. The black window covers are gone, the windows open, light enters the room during the day. Everything seems to be more in order, purist and clean, the (creative) chaos has disappeared. In the evening everything is very dark, and only small sources of light illuminate the audio stations. Speakers all over, as a theme. All architectural elements safe the small (solid) kitchen of the former kantine have been dismantled, now the space is open and only little structured. Behind the kitchen, the place of the former kantine, a door is kept, a dead corner with sleeping chairs, almost nobody stays there. As, by the way, the intimate, and through the cooking, living community character seems to have been changed into a cooler, more distanced atmosphere. Small audio isles, or is it a traditional exhibition with audio installations, which should only come to life through concerts and events? Loudspeakers are hanging on nylon strings and caress my ears with: What's your name? I walk to the door, the door is closed ... sounds, texts, etc. Like ears, the loudspeakers have a kind of eardrum, a membrane.. which lies around on the floor several times, once covered with foil, once filled with milk, when I pass, the membrane filled with milk moves, wobbles and makes noise, another station consists of pot-like metal lids on which water dances, in a dialog, a duet... working stations of the musicians, mixers..., a carpet with silver tea cups, their use prepared for a performance? On the wall, vacuum-packed found pieces, nice but without content. This time, the process character (after preparing the space) seems to be limited to performances. A working laboratory. Or rather a musealization of sound?

This time, the musicians are not interested in recording their performances. They also do not want a live transmission via internet, through its condensation music would shrink to something else. (Through the process character of the groups' work (one folder) and the concerts announced on many separate flyers, you can only keep an overview with great difficulties and time expenditure. The opening hours of this work in progress of the groups at WUK are sometimes unclear and seem to be too long, the disappointment and boredom of some visitors seems to be pre-planned, when nothing happens for quite some time ... what a pity. A closing day could help against camp psychosis. The extraterritorial concerts are formwise again more traditional, upon pressing the button, something already expected is offered.)

la musique et des images
The extra special: La cellule d'intervention METAMKINE (Jérome Noetinger; Christophe Auger, Lionel Marchetti) in the big hall of WUK, an event: "Cinema for the ears and music for the eyes" (Tom Cora), the trio from Grenoble has studied the relations between moving images and sounds since 1987, eight film projectors on the floor (Super 8 and 16 mm) are directed towards the audience and led to a screen in the back with two mirrors, the films are manipulated live, hands, colors, tempo, shadows etc. create abstract images, sound from J. Noetinger's analog synthesizer, sound loops, a game for three, the excitement varies according to the mood, not one medium is the answer, but common questioning, experiments, new forms of experimental sound and film are created. Great evening.+

The opening II "Night of the Living Speakers," a musically really impressive minimalist music/performance... Peter Morrens works with letters of the Billa bags, text fragments, Lionel Marchetti and Jérome Noetinger improvise with a multiplicity of electroacoustic and other sounds (beer cans, plastic cups, etc.) The collaboration between the three seems to work well. Two artists in the dark, sometimes lying, sometimes creeping on the floor, they work with the eight film projectors and the prepared Super 8 and 16 mm experimental films. A unique combination of experimental film material, a film which is not, like usually, premade and prefabricated. The images are created through an overlap of two projectors to one film on the screen, but only for the moment and through spontaneous dealing with sounds, which are created by Jérome Noetinger that evening. A game for three, according to the postition, a bow is spun and taken back, ebbs away... Neither pictures nor sound are primarily sound-producing, and if, changing. No medium as answer, a questioning and studying. First in black and white, then a change into color. I almost breathlessly follow the lines and loops of pictures and sounds. the field of associations is open, alwys differently surprising. Also we, the audience, are part of what we experience because we ourselves contribute to the ambience, are essential parts of the performance. The atmosphere at this evening is so dense, which I haven't experienced at a concert for a long time. This is the virtuosity of playing together, a long-time experience is visible, but nothing seems like routine, fixed or unchangeable. I am touched by this wild ride of association, sound, and image worlds... the exit from these sounds/films was not easy.

(Why is there no woman in this group at all?)

Special on May 15 at rhiz: SubBass (Dafeldecker/N.I.C.J.O.B./McGonigl/Noetinger/Stockburger) N.I.C.J.O.B., without respect to other, subte, weaker sounds, superimposes his DJ-sound of strong bass. A mixture would have been good.

Up to now the most interesting week for me. Room for experiments. A carpet with silver stuff in transparent plastic foils (still) not enough, without link to what happens around. Or intention, 'cause, as people told me, this is already an intervention by an artist of the fourth group (Shinichi Yanai) whose intention should be explained in a later concept.

Experimental in terms of the music performances, the room seemed strange without performances in a very traditional, static sense.

P.S. The artists, as I get to know in a talk, perfect
