The Ratchets. Volume is not a matter of electric amplification.

Concert installation for eight computer-driven wood ratchets (ratchet interface: Sukandar Kartadina) and guitars. Jens Brand/D, composition, ratchets Manuel Mota/P guitars.

The evening consists of two parts: Manuel Mota's piece, which is so silent that it almost cannot be perceived, and the ratchets, which are very loud that you have to cover your ears. Manuel Mota plays electronic guitar to the ratchets Ratchets belong to the oldest intsruments of the world. Forms of ratchets can be found in all cultures on Earth. The musical interest which led to the construction of these instruments has to do with their volume. Among the instruments, ratchets generate a lot of noise. This is also the reason for "The Ratchets." The piece is based on the idea of volume and the phenomenon of speed in relation to density. (Jens Brand)
