Svetlana
Maraš was born in 1985 in Serbia, and she lives now and works in
Helsinki, where she is completing MA studies in Sound in New Media at
Helsinki Media Lab.
She was studying music from an early age
starting from piano as major in Primary Music School and Music High
School, to composition at University and the current sound studies. She
participated in many workshops and seminars on the subject of
contemporary composition where she worked with many prominent composers
and performers. In 2010, she had a fellowship in composition at Bang on
Can Summer Institute where she studied with David Lang, Michael Gordon
and Julia Wolfe.
Beside formal studies, Svetlana has come into
the world of improvised music in 2004, and since than this became
significant part of her artistic practice. For a few years, she was
performing as a pianist with Szilard Mezei’s ensemble, and along
with that experimented with various electronics and prepared
instruments. Through the studies at Media Lab, she got familiarized
with modern technology and new media, and today she mostly performs
using laptop. She performs occasionally, with other musicians or solo.
Svetlana’s
interest in music covers a wide field of experimental music, music
theory and sound art. Her work is not defined by the medium, but rather
by dominant conceptual thought and compositional approach that she uses
to create her works. From interactive sound installation, graphical
score and sound objects to composed music or improvisation, all these
works define her primarily as a musician but aim towards dialogue with
a wider field of art. She defines her work in the field of music as a
continuous research of musical concepts, ways of representation and
contextualisation of sound.
